FRIDAY 28th September - pre Lothian warm up

Pre Lothian warm-up trip

As a little treat before the Lothian open doors event I’ve arranged a mini-trip with Swift Coaches, Barrhead in the afternoon on Friday 28th September.

This enthusiast friendly operator has agreed to allow us to photograph their vehicles and ride out on a couple after they return from schools contracts on the Friday afternoon so that anyone staying in the region ahead of the superb Lothian event can sample a couple of quite unusual vehicles.

The fleet includes;

C45HNF Leyland Olympian/Alexander new to Kowloon Motor Bus as DJ3770

MIL5574 Leyland Olympian/Alexander new to Kowloon Motor Bus as DJ1454

J465MJL Leyland Tiger/Wright Goldliner new to Ulsterbus as WXI4413

K984JNV Leyland Tiger/Wright Goldliner new to Ulsterbus as WXI4408

Only ONE of each type is normally taxed and on the road, at time of writing these are C45HNF and J465MJL but that could change depending on maintenance requirements etc at the time. This trip will include rides on two Leyland’s but a third bonus vehicle is possible on the day.

We will meet in Carlibar Road, Barrhead at 1600 which is just beside Barrhead railway station beside the southbound platform and main exit from Barrhead station. There are four trains per hour from Glasgow Central - we will await the arrival of the 1543 Glasgow Central to Kilmarnock. Upon arrival in Barrhead exit the station and turn left, there is a driveway off Carlibar Road just after the station parking area leading to a timber yard, the Swift depot and a metal recycling yard which runs beside the railway line. Please wait around there so we can go up to the depot as a group, we will start with photos before the yard gets too busy. I expect us to be finished for around 1800 but I recommend allowing extra time in case the third vehicle is possible, we will aim to finish before the 1855 train at the latest.

Unlike previous trips you may have been on this will be a very informal one; the routes and photo stops will be the chosen by the driver and there will be no fare charged. HOWEVER, I will carry out a collection to thank them for their hospitality and depending on passenger numbers and the third vehicle I will anticipate a recommended donation level of between £5 and £10. You don't need to pre-book or reserve a place; simply turn up on the day. There is no requirement to be a member of any particular group or society to join this trip. You must NOT contact the operator with any enquiries relating to this trip as they will not be able to answer any questions- if you require any further information or you have any questions please e-mail me at chrismartin13601 (at) hotmail.co.uk and I will be happy to help.

We sincerely look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on this trip, please forward this message onto anyone else who you think may be interested and please cut and paste into other news groups or regional social media groups if you think it might interest their members.

Sunday 30th September - The Lothian Loiterer

The Lothian Loiterer

Following numerous requests we have arranged a new trip in Scotland on Sunday 30th September, the day after the excellent Lothian Open Doors Event which justifiably brings enthusiasts from far and wide to the region to travel on their immaculate preserved fleet. Our “after-party” trip will use five ex Lothian Alexander bodied Leyland Olympians so why not make a weekend of it rather than rushing back as soon as the event in Edinburgh finishes! We will visit McDade, Uddingston and travel on five of the following six vehicles (subject to availability) G345CSG, G833GSX, G834GSX, G835GSX, J862TSC, J870TSC.This trip is operated by Nik Anthony and will aim to cover many roads around the region which rarely, if ever, see double deck operation including the scenic Carron Valley.

Our day will start outside the McDade depot which is located on John Hendry Road (postcode G71 7EJ) at 0930- if you are arriving by car please park responsibly in the area outside the depot and wait at the entrance. The main pick-up will be directly outside Motherwell railway station at 0950 in the bus stop layby. During each run we will stop somewhere suitable to allow passengers to photograph the vehicle and there will be time to see and photograph the other vehicles in the fleet at the depot. Our lunch break will be taken in Kirkintilloch. The final journey of the day will make TWO drop offs at Motherwell railway station, firstly at approx. 1620- this bus will then cover some largely residential roads around Hamilton before making a second drop off also at Motherwell station at approx. 1715 before returning directly to the depot for a 1735 arrival.

The fare for the entire day of travelling is £20 for all passengers. You don't need to pre-book or reserve a place, simply turn up on the day, hop on the bus and we will collect your fare during the journey. There is no requirement to be a member of any particular group or society to join this trip, nor do you require an invitation to join us.

Our trip is a private hire and the operator will not be able to answer any questions or enquiries- if you require any further information or you have any questions please e-mail one of us at chrismartin13601 (at) hotmail.co.uk or nik280 (at) btinternet.com (substitute the correct @ symbols!).

We sincerely look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on this trip, please forward this message onto anyone else who you think may be interested and please cut and paste into other news groups if you think it might interest their members.

Saturday 20th October - The South Midland Sortie

The South Midland Sortie

We are pleased to announce another new trip which will see us return to Walters Coaches, Oxford for a road coverage trip using three different Olympians on Saturday 20th October. This trip is operated by Nik Anthony and our plan has been devised to explore some parts of Oxfordshire and just into two adjoining counties covering many roads around the region which rarely, if ever, see double deck operation.

The plan includes travel on three different buses, two of which were not featured on the Leyland Olympians Group trip here back in May. For the first and third runs we have asked for Volvo Olympians; P415KSX (Alexander bodywork, new to Lothian) and P353ROO (East Lancs bodywork, new to Harris Bus) with similar R358XVX requested should either of those be unavailable. For the 78 mile long main run which will include visiting Carterton for a lunch break on a trip that crosses into the edge of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire we have requested F845ENV (Leyland bodywork new to Isle of Man as BMN88G) with similar bodywork H809AGX to be used if F845ENV is unavailable.

There are two pick-up locations; at 1000 just outside Thornhill Park and Ride site at the bus stop in the layby just after the P&R site entrance on the northbound carriageway of the A40. You can park in Thornhill P&R for up to 11 hours for £2. The second pick-up will be at 1020 in Park End Street at Frideswide Square just outside the Saïd Business School at stop R7 which is very close to the main Oxford rail station and is the stop used by buses heading for the city centre. The first run includes a run out to Islip and the surrounding area, the third run will take us to Radley and drop-off near Oxford rail station at approx. 1745 before returning to the depot via a final drop-off opposite the Thornhill P&R site at 1805.

During each run we will stop somewhere suitable to allow passengers to photograph the vehicle and there will be time to see and photograph the other vehicles in the fleet at the depot.
